Preparing for your Newborn Session

Preparing for your newborn session

Congratulations! This is such an exciting time! Capturing those first days of your baby’s life will certainly be treasured!

Be sure to schedule your newborn session well in advance of your little one’s grand arrival! The beginning of your second trimester is a great time to request your session. Your due date will be placed on my calendar and we will begin planning your newborn session! I highly recommend a quick phone call so we can get to know one another and plan your session.

Newborn sessions will be conducted 5-10 days after birth in my smoke free, pet free, germ free (if someone is sick in my home-I will refer you to another photographer) home studio located in Mink Shoals, WV. Sessions typically last 2-3 hours. Plenty of time is allowed for feeding and cuddling your newborn.

Siblings and parents may join the session at no extra cost.

What to bring

Newborn clothes rarely fit, so babies are best photographed in their Birthday suit!  Dress your baby in an outfit that can be easily removed so your session can be started right away without much disturbance!

Feel free to bring personal items that represent a special hobby, occupation, favorite sports team, etc. A family heirloom, a blanket made by grandma and other items can be used to add that personal touch to your images. I will have plenty of hats, wraps and headbands available for you to choose from.

Feel free to bring snacks for yourself and siblings and plenty of milk for the newborn. A pacifier is also helpful during the session. Even if your little one doesn’t seem to like it, bring one. He or she may take on from me. A few things to entertain older siblings may also be helpful.

Simple creams or all back clothing with no patterns make stunning parent and sibling photos. Bring an extra change of clothes for parents; accidents may happen when diapers are off.

My home will be kept toasty warm to keep the baby sleepy and comfortable. Please remember this when selecting your clothing.

Just Before the Session

A sleepy, well-fed baby is the recipe for great newborn photos.

It is helpful if you try to keep your baby awake a half hour to an hour prior to the session. If they fall asleep in the car, that’s ok! We will start the session right away when you arrive.

If you live close to my studio, you may choose to feed your baby before you leave for the session. Be sure to get a good burp to avoid bellyaches! If you live further than 45 minutes away, I would recommend feeding your child once you arrive. A private nursing room is available to breastfeeding moms.

If your baby has scratches, baby acne or peeling skin; don’t worry! This is common and will be retouched during the editing process.

My commitment to you is to provide you with a safe, comfortable newborn session and photos that will be treasured for generations. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
